Deputy Devin Elliott of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has received the Illinois State Police Director’s Award of Distinction for his courageous actions during an emergency incident on May 9th, 2023. This recognition was presented by State Police Director Brendan Kelly at a ceremony in Springfield, IL.

The award honors Deputy Elliott for his prompt response when he was among the first responders to a situation on Interstate 64 near Mt. Vernon, where two State Troopers were involved in a gunfire exchange while assisting a stranded motorist. Deputy Elliott provided critical support to Sergeant Boguslaw Kramarz, who had been shot, by offering cover and quickly assessing the scene. He then transported Sergeant Kramarz to the hospital in his squad car as more help arrived.

The incident resulted in the suspect being fatally shot at the scene. Sergeant Kramarz suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while Trooper Timothy Harper was unharmed. In recognition of their bravery, Kramarz received both the Medal for Valor and the Purple Heart Medal, while Harper was awarded the Medal for Valor.
