The Illinois State Police have provided additional details regarding the tragic death of 28-year-old Illinois State Trooper Corey Thompsen.
The incident occurred on Friday at approximately 3:40 p.m. near Champaign, as Thompsen was riding his patrol motorcycle east on Leverette Road toward County Road 1300E. A truck, driven by 32-year-old Helen Torres, was heading south on County Road 1300E. She stopped at the intersection but then pulled onto the road, colliding with Thompsen’s motorcycle, according to authorities. A witness rendered assistance to Thompsen until an ambulance arrived to transport him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m.
Torres was also taken to the hospital, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities stated that Torres was cited for failing to yield the right of way at a stop intersection and that she was driving without a valid license.
Thompsen had been with the Illinois State Police for nearly five years and was part of the Special Operations Group Fatal Four team. He is survived by his wife, mother, father, and brothers.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
