In recent days, Southern Illinois has experienced four earthquakes.
The latest tremor, a magnitude 1.8, struck approximately 3 miles northwest of Ridgely, Tennessee, at 1:33 a.m. on November 4th, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This earthquake occurred at a depth of about 5 miles.
On October 31st, the USGS reported a 2.0 magnitude quake near Ullin, Illinois, around 3:40 p.m. This earthquake was located nearly two miles northeast of Ullin and registered at a depth of roughly 8 miles. The USGS received five reports from individuals who felt this quake, including two responses from Olmstead, with other reports coming from New Athens, Illinois, Mascoutah, Illinois, and Merom, Indiana, nearly 150 miles away.
Additionally, on the night of November 2nd, at 10:44 p.m., a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded about two miles east of Steele, Missouri, at a depth of approximately 6 miles. The USGS received 624 reports from people who felt this tremor, with responses coming from as far away as Newmarket, New Hampshire, over 1,100 miles from the epicenter.
Later that same night, at 10:57 p.m., a second earthquake measuring 2.1 magnitude was reported near the same area as the 3.7 quake, also about two miles east of Steele. This tremor was recorded at a depth of 5 miles, and the USGS received 12 reports from individuals who felt it, with locations including Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Hayti, Missouri; Metropolis, Illinois; Caruthersville, Missouri; Burlison, Tennessee; Memphis, Tennessee; Lexington, Tennessee; Waynesboro, Tennessee; and Mount Ida, Arkansas, which is approximately 238 miles from the epicenter.
