Anson Fenton, the former Police Chief of Wayne City, appeared in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis last Friday for his arraignment on charges related to the improper sale of forfeited vehicles for personal gain. During the hearing, Fenton waived his right to a full reading of the charges and entered a not guilty plea.

Fenton faces two counts: Misapplication of Property from Federally Funded Programs and Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property. The charges involve a 2017 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he traded for a 1991 Mustang, and a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that he later sold. He is also accused of transporting a stolen 2022 Hayabusa motorcycle from Wayne County to Alexandria, Virginia.

Following the arraignment, Fenton was released on a personal recognizance bond, with the stipulation that he must surrender all firearms and his FOID/Concealed Carry License within two business days. He is being represented by attorney Valery Paige Clark Strawn from Mt. Vernon. A final pretrial conference and jury trial date will be set by U.S. District Judge Stephen P. McGlynn. If found guilty, Fenton could face up to 10 years in prison and fines reaching $250,000 for each count.
