Following the recent winter storm, approximately 20 large trees are blocking the road to the Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest. Additionally, several other trees are top-heavy and leaning precariously near the roadway. The road itself is icy, creating hazardous conditions.
In order to protect the safety of visitors and Forest Service personnel, the gate will be closed until further notice. This closure will remain in effect through the anticipated winter weather event on Friday, which will allow staff to safely manage the fallen trees. The Shawnee National Forest team plans to reassess the situation and, weather permitting, begin tree removal with the appropriate equipment next week.
