By Mark Wells Feb 24, 2025 | 11:55 AM

A 30 by 40-foot wooden barn, believed to date back to the late 1800s, was completely destroyed in an early Sunday morning fire in Jefferson County.

Fire officials reported that the blaze occurred on the Bernard Morris property at 17,922 East Liberty Road. Morris’ son first spotted the fire after it had already engulfed the barn, and by the time firefighters arrived, the roof was collapsing.

The barn and all of its contents, which included a tractor, side-by-side vehicle, riding lawn mower, and several older vehicles, are considered a total loss. Although the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, it is suspected to be electrical in nature.

Jefferson Fire called in mutual aid from Mt. Vernon City, Bluford, Wayne City, and Ewing to assist in battling the blaze. Benton and Woodlawn provided coverage for the Jefferson Fire Station in case of additional emergencies.

The fire call came in at 12:40 AM, and firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 3:30 AM.
