IHSA FACES CHALLENGES OVER TRANSGENDER ATHLETE PARTICIPATION IN STATE EVENTS

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is expressing concerns about its position regarding the participation of transgender athletes in state series events. In a statement to Illinois State Senators yesterday, the IHSA emphasized its commitment to comply with existing laws while remaining neutral on the matter.

“The IHSA seeks to adhere to the law and does not take a stance on whether federal and state laws align. However, due to the conflicting nature of these laws, we find ourselves in an untenable position. We urge state officials—legislators, the governor, and the Attorney General—to collaborate with federal authorities for clear guidance on this issue,” the statement read.

The IHSA clarified that this situation specifically impacts state series competitions organized by the association, while individual member schools retain the authority to determine participation opportunities for transgender students during the regular season.

Today, Republican State Senator Dale Fowler challenged the IHSA’s position, arguing that their statement lacks clarity. “This shouldn’t be a controversial issue. It’s about fairness and common sense. Female athletes deserve the right to compete on a level playing field and have their spaces respected. We will not allow girls to compete under unfair conditions,” Fowler stated.

Senator Fowler was among several lawmakers across the state who submitted inquiries to the IHSA regarding its policy on transgender athlete participation.
