MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The Cardinals held off the Giants for a win at historic Rickwood Field , a game that paid tribute to the Negro Leagues. St. Louis downed San Francisco 6-5 at America’s oldest ballpark in Birmingham, Alabama. Brendan Donovan was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Alec Burleson also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Andre Pallante earned the win despite allowing five runs, while Ryan Helsley recorded his 25th save. The Cardinals snapped a two-game losing skid to move to 37-and-37. The Cardinals are off today as the series moves back to St. Louis. First pitch is Saturday afternoon at 1:15.

The Chicago Cubs begin a weekend series against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field this afternoon. The Cubs are coming off a series win over the San Francisco Giants earlier this week. Chicago is in fourth place in the NL Central at 36-and-39. Shota Imanaga starts for the Northsiders today. Game time is at 1:20PM.

The Chicago White Sox gave up four runs in the top of the seventh during a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox led by two entering the inning before Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez both hit RBI singles to tie the game. Lenyn Sosa had a throwing error later in the inning that let the go-ahead run score. Andrew Vaughn had a pair of hits and two RBI in the losing effort, and Steven Wilson was charged with his fourth loss in relief. The Southsiders remain in last place in the AL Central at 20-and-56. Erick Fedde starts for Chicago against the Tigers tonight at 5:40.

NBA NEWS:

The Chicago Bulls are making a move. According to ESPN, the Bulls are dealing guard Alex Caruso to the Thunder in exchange for guard Josh Giddey. In 71 games last season, Caruso averaged a career-high ten-point-one points per game and shot over 40-percent on threes. He was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive Second Team in 2023-24 after being named to the First Team in 2022-23. Giddey played in 80 games last season, averaging career lows in points, rebounds and assists.

NHL NEWS:

The Chicago Blackhawks are adding some forward depth. The team re-signed Cole Guttman to a one-year two-way contract yesterday. He will make 775-thousand dollars in the 2024-25 season. Guttman had four goals and four assists in 27 games with Chicago last season.

Illini Basketball Hanging Up Shannon’s Jersey

Terrence Shannon Jr. will be immortalized at State Farm Stadium. Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman announced yesterday that the basketball program will put Shannon’s number-zero jersey in the rafters above the court. Shannon spent the last two seasons with Illinois. He averaged 23 points per game in 32 appearances last season.
