Following heavy rainfall Tuesday morning in Nashville, a dam and a secondary dam failed, prompting an evacuation warning for residents in the area. The secondary dam collapse occurred around 10 a.m., following the initial dam failure, as reported by the Washington County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).
The intense rainfall, totaling over six inches, led to the overtopping of the Nashville Reservoir starting from Monday night through Tuesday. This resulted in waist-deep flooding in some areas, necessitating the rescue of a resident who was trapped in her home.
The flooding also caused the closure of many roads in Washington County, impacting travel for motorists throughout the region. Approximately 200 homes were deemed at risk following the dam overtopping, leading to a successful evacuation effort.
Residents in need of shelter were directed to the community center in Nashville, with additional support provided by the Red Cross. SSM Health in Illinois established a shelter at 680 W. Walnut in Nashville, while their Nashville Clinic remains closed until further notice.
Furthermore, both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 in Washington County were temporarily shut down due to floodwaters, with the road reopening to traffic later in the evening.
