Registration is open the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church Upward Soccer Season set to kick off September 7th. Open to ages pre-K 4th thru 8th grade. Practices will begin the week of August 26th and games will be played on Saturdays and weeknights. Cost is $50 for each player and can be paid online at the end of registration or at evaluations.. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning during a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Victor Scott-the-second hit a two-run homer in the inning to tie the game at two before Tommy Pham smashed a go-ahead two run shot. Sonny Gray earned his 11th win after striking out six and holding Tampa to two runs on four hits in seven innings, while Ryan Helsley picked up his 35th save. St. Louis snapped a two-game losing streak. The Cardinals are in second place in the NL Central at 58-and-56. Erick Fedde takes the mound for St. Louis tonight at 6:45.
The Chicago Cubs got off to a fast start during a 7-3 win over the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field. Isaac Paredes hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first and the Cubs led the rest of the way. Paredes finished the game with four RBI, and Shota Imanaga earned his ninth win after striking out ten and allowing two runs on two hits in seven innings. The Northsiders have won two of three, but they remain in last place in the NL Central at 56-and-60. Javier Assad starts for the Cubs against Minnesota this afternoon\ at 1:20.
The Chicago White Sox have finally put an end to their 21-game losing streak. The Southsiders earned a 5-1 win over the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum yesterday.
Chicago remains in last place in the AL Central at 28-and-88. Davis Martin starts for the White Sox against Oakland this afternoon.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The U.S. is adding another gold medal in track and field at the Paris Olympics. Gabby Thomas dominated the women’s 200 meter race, finishing first with a time of 21-point-83 seconds. The win gave Team USA its fifth gold medal in track and field, with no other country having more than two. Thomas’ Team USA teammate Brittany Brown won bronze in the event, while St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred took silver. Elsewhere, Cole Hocker won gold and Yared Nuguse won bronze in the men’s 1500 meter. Several more medals will be handed out in athletics today including the men’s 400-meter where three Americans hope to grab gold.
Team USA men’s basketball demolished Brazil 122-87 to advance to the semifinal round at the Paris Olympics. USA will meet Serbia in the semifinals tomorrow. Meanwhile, the U.S. women’s basketball team faces Nigeria today in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. women’s soccer team will play for a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. They defeated Germany 1-0 in the semifinals of the women’s soccer tournament on Tuesday. The U.S. will now battle Brazil for the gold medal on Saturday. Team USA will be trying to win its first gold since 2012. Brazil beat tournament favorite Spain 4-2 to advance.
The U.S. has just one duo remaining in beach volleyball at the Paris Olympics. The American team of Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng saw their run come to an end after losing to Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. That leaves the men’s duo of Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh as the last remaining medal hopefuls for the U.S. They will face Qatar in the quarterfinals today.
The U.S. is now alone atop the gold medal standings at the Paris Olympics. Team USA continues to lead the way with 24 gold medals and 86 total medals after winning seven more on Tuesday, which included three more gold. China remains second with 59 total medals and 22 gold. France is third with 48 overall medals.
