MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
Nolan Arenado provided the heroics as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 in ten innings at Busch Stadium. Arenado crushed a grand slam in the bottom of the tenth to walk-off Milwaukee after Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham drew back-to-back bases loaded walks in the ninth to send the game to extras. Luken Baker also homered in the victory, while Ryan Helsley earned his fifth win in relief. St. Louis snapped a two-game losing streak. The Cardinals are in second place in the NL Central at 62-and-64. Miles Mikolas starts for St. Louis against Milwaukee this afternoon.

The St. Louis Cardinals are giving one of their best hitters from 2023 a chance to find his swing in the minors. The team optioned infielder Nolan Gorman to Triple-A Memphis yesterday. Gorman hit 27 home runs and drove in 76 runs a year ago, but he’s hitting just .203 with 19 homers and 50 RBI in 107 games. The team recalled Jose Fermin to replace Gorman on the active roster.

The Chicago Cubs surrendered a pair of four-run innings during an 8-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Wrigley Field. Jameson Taillon was charged with his eighth loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in five frames. He gave up all four runs on a pair of two-run homers in the second. Christian Bethancourt homered in the losing effort. The Northsiders dropped to third place in the NL Central at 62-and-65. They send Justin Steele to the mound against the Tigers this afternoon.

The Chicago White Sox put an end to their four-game losing skid with a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in the series finale at Oracle Park. Korey Lee and Lenyn Sosa [[ LEN-een ]] each hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth to break open a tie. Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn also had an RBI in the victory. Fraser Ellard earned his first win after throwing two strikeouts through one inning of relief. The White Sox are at the bottom of the AL Central at 31-and-97. The Southsiders host the Tigers tomorrow night.

Reds’ Votto Retires:
A Reds legend is stepping away from baseball for good. Joey Votto announced his retirement on Wednesday. The first baseman signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays back in March, but several injuries kept him from making the major league roster. The 40-year-old was selected by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2002 draft and won the 2010 NL MVP award. The six-time All-Star hit .297 with 356 home runs over his 17-year career with Cincy.

NFL NEWS:
The final week of the NFL preseason is set to kick off tonight. The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are set to host the Chicago Bears, while the Indianapolis Colts are going to pay a visit to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bears will look to close out the preseason with an unblemished 4-and-0 record after playing in the Hall of Fame game. The action continues on Friday with three more games, highlighted by a Sin City showdown between the Raiders and San Francisco 49ers.
