Area rivers remain on the low side with the recent run of dry weather the region has been experiencing.  Here’s the latest stages as of this morning:  Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 4.78 feet.  Flood stage is 17 feet.  At Clay City the river reads 4.48 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  The reading at Carmi is 3.48 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 5.03 feet.  Flood stage is 15 feet.  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 3.51 feet.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 1.22 feet this morning.

The National Weather Service at Paducah, Kentucky says a stretch of hot and humid weather is expected for most of next week, with little in the way of precipitation.  High temperatures are expected to be well into the 90s, and approach 100 degrees by mid-week.  A slight cooldown is expected by next weekend, heading into the Labor Day holiday, with small chances for rain starting Wednesday.

The extended forecasts are hinting at the possibility of some relief, in the form of cooler temperatures and higher rain chances.  The six to ten day outlook is calling for above normal temperatures and normal precipitation, while the 8 to 14 day outlook, running through September 6th, is showing below normal temperatures and normal precipitation.  Despite the recent dry weather, there is currently no dry or drought conditions in our area, although some forecasters say the possibility of what they are calling a “flash drought” could develop in the area in the next one to two weeks.
