MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 at Target Field. Minnesota led by a run entering the inning, but Lars Nootbaar hit a two-run single to put St. Louis up for good. Victor Scott-the-second homered in the victory, while Shawn Armstrong earned his third win in relief. St. Louis took two of three in the series and is in second place in the NL Central at 65-and-65. Kyle Gibson starts for the Cardinals against San Diego tonight. In other team news, Willson Contreras will head to the ten-day injured list after breaking his finger during Saturday’s game against Minnesota.

The Chicago Cubs never led during a 7-2 loss to the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park. Chicago gave up two runs in the bottom of the first but kept it close until the Marlins blew the game open with a four-run eighth. Ian Happ had three hits and an RBI in the losing effort, while Javier Assad was charged with his fourth loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in seven frames. The Cubs dropped to third place in the NL Central at 65-and-66. They send Jameson Taillon to the mound against the Pirates tonight.

The Chicago White Sox are the second-fastest team to 100 losses after a 9-4 defeat at the hand of the Detroit Tigers at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Southsiders led by a run entering the fifth before giving up three in the inning. Andrew Vaughn homered in the losing effort, while Jonathan Cannon fell to 2-and-8 after surrendering five runs on eight hits in four innings. Chicago is in last place in the AL Central at 31-and-100. The Sox send Davis Martin to the mound against the Tigers tonight.
