LAW TO REDUCE SECRETARY OF STATE VISITS WITH 4-AND 8-YEAR LICENSE OPTIONS AVAILABLE SOON

Illinois drivers will soon have the choice between a four-year or an eight-year driver’s license due to new legislation recently enacted.

State Senator Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) stated that Senate Bill 275 requires the Secretary of State to set up regulations for this option by January 1, 2027, with the new licenses expected to be available to motorists by July 1 of that year.

This change aims to minimize the number of visits to the DMV, providing greater convenience for drivers and aligning Illinois with other states that already offer extended license validity periods. An eight-year license will cost $60, double the fee for a four-year license.

The new law is anticipated to help ease the difficulties motorists encounter when making appointments at driver services facilities, offering more flexibility and reducing wait times.
