Carolyn Sue Smith, 86, of Carmi, Illinois, died Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Heart-to-Heart Hospice in Evansville, Indiana. She was born March 10, 1938, in Salem, Illinois, the daughter of Carl G. and Mildred Lucille (Wood) Anderson. She married Ray Smith on August 22, 1959, and he survives.
Carolyn graduated from Carmi Township High School and continued her education earning both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s Degree in education from the University of Illinois. At the university, she was an active member of 4H House, both as a student and an alumna. While living in Champaign-Urbana, she was involved in Women’s Bible Study Fellowship. She was an active member of First Christian Church in Carmi. Some of her favorite pastimes were sewing, reading, playing cards, and other games.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Smith of Carmi; sons Barry Smith (Jessica Paranto) of Carmi, Brian Smith of Hillsboro, North Carolina; daughter Rachel (Stephen) Spaide of Mt. Zion, Illinois; grandchildren Kathleen Smith, Jacob Spaide, and Ella Spaide.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert D. Anderson.
Visitation and funeral are Friday, August 30, 2024, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi, Illinois. Visitation is at 10 followed by funeral at noon. Burial will be in White County Memorial Gardens west of Carmi.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in Carmi, and will be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel.
