52-year-old Edward Abel of Fairfield who has been imprisoned as a sexually dangerous person since July 2010, is filing a petition for his release, claiming he has recovered. Currently housed at the Big Muddy Correctional Center in Ina, Abel can only be released if he demonstrates that he no longer poses a danger to society. During a hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Abel’s attorney, Karlie Paige Frazier from Mt. Vernon, informed the court of her intent to file a petition asserting her client’s recovery after completing several evaluations. Circuit Judge Denton Aud presided over the hearing via Zoom and scheduled a status hearing for October 22nd. Abel’s criminal record as a sex offender dates back to 2007, when he was sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor under 13. He was subsequently classified as a sexually dangerous person and sentenced to imprisonment until he could prove his recovery.
