HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL FROM SATURDAY:
The Fairfield Lady Mules JV Volleyball team placed second in the 8-team Carterville JV Volleyball Tournament Saturday. Teams participating were; Carterville, Marion, NCOE, Pinckneyville, Mt. Vernon, Murphysboro, Nashville and Fairfield. Lady Mules lost the Championship game to NCOE in 2 sets. Lady Mules beat Pinckneyville, Mt. Vernon, Murphysboro and Nashville to go 4-1 in the tournament.
The Edwards County Lady Lions Volleyball team defeated DuQuoin in 2 sets to win the Massac Co Tournament Championship Saturday. The Lady Lions beat Marion in 3 sets, beat Thompsonville in 2 sets, beat Centralia in 3 sets.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh during their 2-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals trailed by one entering the bottom of the sixth, but Nolan Arenado tied the game with an RBI single. In the seventh, Lars Nootbaar scored on a wild pitch to put St. Louis up for good. Andre Pallante earned his eighth win after holding Cleveland to a run on one hit in seven innings, and Ryan Helsley picked up his 47th save. The Cards have won five of seven to improve to 79-and-77. St. Louis is at Colorado tomorrow.
Shota Imanaga tossed a gem as the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 at Wrigley Field. Imanaga held Washington to six hits over seven scoreless innings to earn his 15th win of the season. Mike Tauchman, Michael Busch, and Miguel Amaya all went deep in the victory. The Cubs improved to 80-and-76 but were already eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the weekend. Nate Pearson starts for the Northsiders against Philadelphia tonight.
No team in modern MLB history has lost more games than the 2024 Chicago White Sox. The Sox suffered their 120th loss in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Padres at Petco Park yesterday. Chicago surrendered three runs in the bottom of the eighth during the losing effort. Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas both homered, while Fraser Ellard was charged with his third loss in relief. With the loss, Chicago matched the 1962 Mets for most losses in a modern MLB season with 120. The Southsiders have six more chances to break the record. They host the Angels tomorrow.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL FROM SATURDAY:
The number-21 Illinois Fighting Illini remain undefeated following a 31-24 overtime win against Nebraska at Memorial Stadium on Friday. Luke Altmyer tied the game by hitting Brandon Henderson for a six-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and he gave the Illini the lead with a four-yard touchdown pass to Pat Bryant. Illinois sacked Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola three times on the next drive to secure the win. Altmyer passed for 215 yards and four touchdowns, while Bryant hauled in two scores. The 4-and-0 Illini are at number-eight Penn State this Saturday.
WNBA PLAYOFFS:
The Indiana Fever fell to the Connecticut Sun 93-69 in their playoff opener. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever in scoring with 21 points. Aliyah Boston recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Clark chipped in with 11 points and eight assists. Indiana will look to avoid elimination when it visits Connecticut for Game Two Wednesday night.
NHL PRESEASON:
The St. Louis Blues surrendered three goals in the third period of a 5-3 preseason loss to the Utah Hockey Club at Wells Fargo Arena. Dylan Holloway, Anton Malmstrom, and Simon Robertsson all scored in the losing effort. The Blues continue preseason play with a game against Columbus on Wednesday.
