At Monday’s Grayville City Council meeting, Mayor Travis Thompson and city leaders officially honored long-time city employee and Clerk JoEllen Seil by presenting her with a key to the city, recognizing her 37 years of dedicated public service. Seil, who began her career with Grayville in August 1987, attended her final City Council meeting from the gallery before her retirement on September 30th. Police Chief Robert Hatcher, now the newly appointed City Administrator, will assume her responsibilities.
The meeting also featured the adoption of Ordinance 962, which establishes the Grayville Business District. City leaders believe this initiative will help attract and support businesses in the area.
Arlynn Davis presented the council with an audit that revealed no significant issues, highlighting a solid financial position for the city, especially concerning its utilities. The net positions reported were impressive: nearly $1.3 million for water, $397,000 for sewer, $2.4 million for gas, and $26,000 for garbage, totaling over $4.1 million across all utility funds.
Grayville is currently undertaking several projects, including a water main replacement that is now underway. Engineer Rex Gower updated the council on additional projects, such as the Albion/Grayville water treatment plant and a proposed grant for wastewater treatment.
The council approved $22,000 in TIF funds for Nowark Investments to help cover a new roof, estimated to cost over $88,000. They also decided to table discussions on sewer improvements at the KOA campground, pending due process as advised by city attorney Jay Walden. A special council meeting is expected to expedite necessary work there.
The Grayville swimming pool concession stand will now offer snacks only, and the council approved a tax levy that should provide some relief to local taxpayers. Commissioners Andi Ford and Don Baldwin supported Treasurer Sharon Walden’s recommendation for the city to live within its means and aim to save residents money, with the tax levy projected to generate $266,181 based on estimates.
