Kratom has been identified as the leading contributor in the overdose death of 28-year-old Nikolas Heath Brown from Carmi. His official cause of death, determined to be multiple toxicity, indicated that Kratom was the most significant substance involved. Brown was found dead in his home on August 6th, with evidence suggesting he had consumed a substantial amount of Kratom.
Toxicology tests conducted during his autopsy revealed a combination of substances in his system, including mitragynine (the active compound in Kratom), oxycodone, hydroxyzine, clonazepam, and gabapentin. White County Coroner Chris Marsh confirmed that Kratom was the largest contributor to the drug mixture.
Kratom, which is legal in Illinois, is readily available in smoke shops, liquor stores, and convenience stores. It is derived from a tree in the coffee family found in Southeast Asia and Africa. Traditionally, people use Kratom by chewing its leaves or drinking tea made from boiled leaves. In Illinois, it is commonly sold in pill form.
