MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their 2024 campaign with a 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants in San Francisco. The Cardinals finished the season in third place in the NL Central at 83-and-79. The St. Louis Cardinals are moving on from their MVP first baseman. Reports indicsate that the team does not plan to pursue a new contract with pending free agent Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt has been with the Cardinals for the past six seasons, and he won the 2022 NL MVP award with the team. The 37-year-old hit .245 with 22 home runs and 65 RBI in 2024.
The Chicago Cubs had just three hits during a 3-0, ten-inning loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. The Cubs finished 2024 in second place in the NL Central at 83-and-79.
The worst team in modern MLB history ended its season with a win yesterday. The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 9-5. The White Sox finished the season with a 41-and-121 record.

MLB PLAYOFF PICTURE STILL UNCLEAR:
The Major League Baseball playoffs will need another day to form a clear picture. The Mets and Braves square off in a doubleheader on Monday to determine the National League Wild Card winners. If either side sweeps, that team plus the Diamondbacks will earn postseason berths. If the sides split, then New York and Atlanta will claim both spots. The Padres took the top Wild Card spot while the NL Central-winning Brewers will also play in the opening round. The MLB-best Dodgers and second-place Phillies earned first-round byes. In the American League, the Yankees and Guardians earned the top two spots. The West-winning Astros host the Tigers while the Royals visit the Orioles in the Wild Card round.
DODGERS’ OHTANI DENIED TRIPLE CROWN:
Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani [[ show-HEY oh-TAWN-ee ]] fell just short of winning the first National League Triple Crown since 1937. Ohtani ended the regular season with a .310 batting average to miss out on the NL batting title, which was won by San Diego’s Luis Arraez. Ohtani led the NL with 54 home runs and 130 RBI. He also had 59 stolen bases, becoming the first ever 50-50 player in big league history. As for Arraez, he finished with a .314 average to become the first player since the 1800s to win batting titles with three different teams.
SCHUMAKER NOT RETURNING TO THE MARLINS:
The Miami Marlins are looking for a new manager. The team announced that Skip Schumaker is not coming back as manager after two seasons. Marlins owner Bruce Sherman said in a statement that ownership, president of baseball operations Peter Bendix and Schumaker “mutually agreed to part ways.” In two seasons as Miami’s manager, Schumaker went 146-and-178. The Marlins were 84-and-78 and made the playoffs in 2023. He was named National League Manager of the Year. However, the team went 62-and-100 in 2024.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS:
The number-25 Illinois Fighting Illini faded down the stretch of a 21-7 loss to number-seven Penn State at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. The Illini got on the board first when Luke Altmyer hit Carson Goda for a four-yard touchdown. However, Penn State responded on the next drive and then outscored Illinois 14-0 in the second half. Altmyer finished with 185 passing yards and an interception to go along with his early touchdown. The Illini fell to 4-and-1 overall and 1-and-1 in the Big Ten. They host Purdue on October 12th.
NHL PRESEASON:
The St. Louis Blues came through in the clutch during a 3-2 preseason win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Enterprise Center. Dylan Holloway and Alexey Toropchenko both scored in the third period to tie the game at two, and Holloway netted the game-winner in the extra frame. St. Louis is 1-and-3 in exhibition play. The Blues host Columbus tomorrow.
