HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
In a rare Varsity game on a Monday, Carmi defeated Fairfield 36-20 in Black Diamond Conference action. The Bulldogs improve to 4-1, while the Mules fall to 2-3 on the season. This game was rescheduled to Monday due to the weekend weather. The Mules will host Flora for their Homecoming game Saturday at The Train Yard at 1 pm.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NEWS:
Mets, Braves Complete MLB Playoff Field
The Mets and Braves have punched their tickets to the MLB postseason. The National League sides split a doubleheader on Monday with New York taking Game One 8-7 and Atlanta responding with a 3-0 win in Game Two. The result led to the Diamondbacks being eliminated from playoff contention. The Mets face the NL Central-winning Brewers from Milwaukee in Round One today while the Braves head to San Diego to battle the Padres. The Dodgers and Phillies earned first-round byes. In the American League, the West-winning Astros play host to the Tigers today while the Royals visit the Orioles. The Yankees and Guardians also have byes. The Wild Card round is a best-of-three series.
MOZELIAK TO BE DONE AFTER 2025
During the St Louis Cardinals Press Conference, it was announced that John Mozeliak will be done in his role after the 2025 season. Chaim Bloom will take over as the Cardinals President of Baseball Operations following the 2025 season.
It was also announced that payroll will be “reduced” beginning next year. No specifics on roster moves were discussed in detail. It’s obvious that the Cardinals will be going with a youth movement. Emphasis was placed on player development during the entire press conference.
PETE ROSE DIES AT AGE 83
The MLB All-Time Hits leader, Pete Rose, died on Monday at 83. Despite his off-field vices, Rose was arguably the greatest hitter of all-time and certainly earned the nickname of “Charlie Hustle” due to the way he played the game. Not only did he have 4,256 career hits, he also had a lifetime batting average of .303 and was a 17-time All-Star and 3-time World Series Champion. Rose also played in the most MLB games (3,562) and he is a member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame despite being banned from baseball for gambling on the game. He briefly served some prison time locally in Marion, Illinois. Despite numerous appeals, he was never reinstated to baseball or voted into the MLB Hall of Fame.
